Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns Great Island today?

Great Island is owned by the Town of Darien, and was purchased in May 2023 from the Steinkraus Family. The Town’s purchase of this property is a monumental addition to public space in Darien, increasing the town’s publicly accessible waterfront property by 50% and overall greenspace by 11%. A beautiful landscape with roughly one and a half miles of coastline, Great Island is a tremendous opportunity for the community to experience the water and the Long Island Sound.

Bald Eagles Nesting at Great Island – Temporary Trail Closure

A pair of majestic bald eagles has selected Great Island as their nesting site! To support their breeding season and minimize disturbances, a section of the bridle trail will be temporarily closed from February 1 – July 15, 2025.

Why the Closure?

Bald eagles require a quiet, undisturbed environment to successfully raise their young. This temporary closure ensures they have the space they need to thrive. This measure has been approved by the Great Island Advisory Committee and informed by CT-DEEP wildlife experts. Alternative trail routes are available—please check the map for details.

Thank you for helping protect Great Island’s wildlife. Together, we can keep this landscape a sanctuary for all!
