About
Great Island

A New Chapter…

Once a secluded sanctuary, Great Island is now a cherished natural resource for the Town of Darien to enjoy. As we envision its future, we can balance public access with preserving its natural beauty. Our goal is to create a space that invites exploration and community gathering and promotes biodiversity and sustainable ecosystems. Together, we'll shape a vision ensuring Great Island remains a vibrant and enduring haven for people and wildlife. Join us as we dream big for Great Island's future!

Welcoming All to Great Island

Great Island will welcome every resident of the Town of Darien, regardless of age or ability. The Great Island Vision Plan will ensure everyone can explore and enjoy this special place. While the initial phase offers pedestrian access to the paved paths, we are committed to developing inclusive strategies so that all members of our community and visitors from beyond can fully experience the Island's natural beauty.

The Historical Ziegler Estate

For over 100 years, Great Island was home to the Ziegler family, who cherished its natural beauty and added structures that reflect their love for the land. The Estate House, overlooking the Sound, and the central Stables and Riding Ring celebrate the family's equestrian legacy. Other notable features include a quaint beach cottage nestled in the eastern woodlands. The historic architecture and scenic roads remain a testament to the estate's rich history, offering a foundation as we plan for Great Island's future while honoring its past.

The Great Island Vision Plan

Introduction: Revitalizing the Ziegler Estate

Great Island offers a chance to revitalize historic spaces into vibrant community hubs. Imagine the stables as event venues, the estate house as a community center, and the woodland cottages as classrooms or galleries. Together with the Town of Darien's residents and the design team, we'll explore how to blend restoration with new uses, discover Great Island's potential, and enhance its identity through a collaborative process.

A Shared Destination

Connecting with Nature:
Ecology on Great Island

Great Island features rich natural systems and wildlife habitats. The salt marshes at Scott's Cove contribute to the broader ecology of Long Island Sound, and native plants and animals thrive here. We are committed to enhancing these habitats and reinforcing their importance, especially as a vital stopover for migratory birds. This approach will support environmental stewardship and allow the community to engage with Great Island's seasonal cycles and diverse species. Protecting the mature tree canopy and encouraging new growth will strengthen our connection to this unique landscape and ensure that Great Island remains a vibrant, living landscape for future generations.

Building Resilience: Environmental & Community Vitality

Investing in Great Island will enhance Darien's community by offering valuable amenities and serving as a model for understanding local ecosystems. Great Island will provide cooling shade during heatwaves and promote public health through its trails and open spaces. Its wetlands, woodlands, and meadows will raise awareness about biodiversity and support wildlife habitat improvements. Additionally, studying stormwater conditions will help demonstrate effective coastal management practices. Great Island will serve as a model for fostering a harmonious relationship with our dynamic waterfront.
